Employers are obligated to register first-time job employees for tax. First-time job seekers and first-time employees do not need to go to branches to obtain a tax reference number (TRN). It is your employer’s obligation to register you for tax once you are formally employed. Employers can request TRNs for employees via eFiling. SARS will provide the TRN to your employer and the number will appear on your payslip.
